  • Short Bio / Excerpt:

James Ockenden is a prominent Hong Kong-based journalist, writer, and sustainability consultant who is best known as the founder and editor of the independent transport news platform Transit Jam. Born in the United Kingdom, he pursued his higher education at the University of Cambridge, where he graduated with both a Bachelor's and a Master's degree in Natural Sciences, specializing in Materials Science and Metallurgy. During his university years, he developed an early interest in journalism, contributing as a reporter for the student newspaper Varsity.

Following his graduation, Ockenden built an extensive career spanning over 25 years in financial and energy journalism. He worked as an editor and writer for a wide variety of industry publications, focusing heavily on power and energy markets. His editorial portfolio included leadership roles at titles such as Power Plant Technology, International Power Generation, Asian Electricity, Energy Risk, and Asia Risk. Additionally, he contributed articles to mainstream platforms, including the South China Morning Post and Cathay Dragon’s Silkroad magazine.

Ockenden later relocated to Hong Kong, where he shifted his academic and professional focus toward environmental issues and public safety. He earned a Master of Social Sciences in Corporate Environmental Governance from the University of Hong Kong. His passion for pedestrian safety and urban design intensified significantly after becoming a father, prompting him to actively advocate for walkable neighborhoods. He regularly reported pavement obstructions and illegal parking to local authorities, even collaborating with local traffic police divisions on digital solutions to improve community infrastructure.

In 2020, identifying a major deficit in English-language coverage of local traffic and road safety issues, Ockenden founded Transit Jam. The platform became Hong Kong’s first registered publication dedicated entirely to liveable urban environments, sustainable transport, and pedestrian rights. Over a three-year span, Ockenden published hundreds of detailed reports on road safety, investigated over a hundred fatal collisions, and co-hosted public affairs segments on RTHK Radio 3.

The publication faced an abrupt end in May 2023 following heightened political scrutiny. After Ockenden staged a solo demonstration regarding local transport planning during a visit by a Beijing official, he and his family were targeted by pro-Beijing media outlets. Citing safety concerns and intense public pressure, he chose to shut down active reporting on Transit Jam, preserving the website purely as a digital archive of Hong Kong's transit history. In his subsequent career, Ockenden transitioned his analytical focus toward space technology finance while continuing his work as an author and independent commentator.
